Analytic Art Therapy

Analytic art therapy offers a supportive space where art materials and processes are understood as part of the therapeutic process. As an analytic art therapist I work with each person in a responsive, individual way, supporting self-expression through visual and sensory exploration. This can be useful at times when bringing words to your experiences can be challenging.

Analytic art therapy regards unconscious processes and early life experiences as fundamental aspects of what makes us who we are - that the ways in which we see ourselves, relate to others and structure our lives relate to our previous experiences, and operate at levels that we are not always consciously aware of.

For those seeking it, engaging in analytic art therapy can be a way to gain insight into how you came to be who you are. It can also offer a stabilising function, a way to check in with yourself in the here-and-now and develop a regular practice of personal, creative engagement.

What does analytic art therapy look like?

Before committing to working together I offer two preliminary sessions to discuss your needs, explore the art therapy space and materials, and determine if art therapy feels like the right fit for you.

Art therapy sessions run for 50 minutes and are usually attended once a week, though they can be more or less frequent depending on individual needs.

During sessions, I support engagement in creative processes using a range of art materials, examples being watercolour paints, collage, pastels or clay. Analytic art therapy is a slow and gentle process, and I am responsive to each person I work with as to how the therapeutic trajectory unfolds. The experience of each session informs the approach for the next. This might mean the work takes a particular material focus; becomes more or less structured depending on individual needs; or integrates more or less reflection on the art-making process.

All art materials are provided as part of the session fee.
